Rodri is the beating heart of any midfield

The best footballers in history would thrive in any era. With evolving styles, discourse and perceptions, some players gain recognition too late, or seem ill-fitted for the era of their circumstance.

If ever there was a player made for his exact moment, it is Spain’s Rodri. Defensive midfielder, box-to-box, deep lying playmaker, he can do it all. Perfectly suited for possession-based tactics, the chaos of knockout competitions, and the moments of glory that define the biggest games.

Rodri emerged in Spain at a time when Barcelona’s famous trifecta of Andres Iniesta, Xavi and Sergio Busquets had only just begun to disperse. The legacy was untouchable at both club and international level, as they anchored three Champions League winning sides as well as Spain teams which won two Euros and a World Cup.

Iniesta and Xavi were naturally in the spotlight more because of their role in facilitating attacks, and even playing up alongside wingers and forwards at times, but the glue for it all was Busquets.

In Rodri, Spain found a midfield successor to change the expectations of a holding midfielder in a way that hadn’t always been utilized. First and foremost, Rodri is an excellent defender. At 6’3”, his physicality and frame gives him the ability to box out the strongest midfielders and strikers. He can win aerial duels, muscle through challenges and boost the backline almost as an extra center back.

In possession, Rodri is a catalyst. He drops deep to build from the back, he has the technical ability and wherewithal to hold and carry the ball in the middle of the park and the passing range to pick apart opponents near and far.

With Rodri’s emergence, Pep Guardiola and Luis Enrique both benefitted for a full evolution of their respective visions at Manchester City and Spain.

City became the second English club to win a treble in 2022-23, with Rodri providing the breakthrough goal in the UEFA Champions League final for City’s first ever European victory. He was named Man of the Match and Player of the Season in the competition.

The following year, Rodri scored the decisive goal to clinch a fourth straight league title, and would win the Ballon d’Or for a year that included a pivotal role in Spain’s Euro 2024 win under Luis de la Fuente.

He is one of just four true midfielders to win the award this century, but his emergence along with Luka Modric signaled a changing recognition for the influence of midfielders. The beating heart of a team and all it tries to do, Rodri’s importance was all the more apparent in the Guardiola/Enrique systems he was seemingly born to play in.

After the peak came an unfortunate fall for Rodri. He tore his ACL in a match against Arsenal in September 2024 and would not play again until May 20, 2025. In the time since then, he’s remained an important player for club and country, but his form and fitness have yet to fully recover.

He made just 21 Premier League appearances for City this season as they again fell short of reclaiming the title. He’s made just four appearances for Spain since returning, but was included in the World Cup squad.

Knee injuries take time, and perhaps things won’t be as straightforward for Rodri this summer as at his last tournament. But he is a player who has proven he is made for the big moment. At just 29, he has plenty more football to play, and this summer he’ll do it at the heart of one of the favorites to win the whole thing.
