The first day of the 2025 Ryder Cup is in the books and the Europeans are feeling it as we enter the weekend.
2025 Ryder Cup: Europe leads after Friday, 5.5 to 2.5
The Europeans are up big after Friday’s action at the Ryder Cup

Following Friday’s action the reigning Ryder Cup Champions hold a 5.5 to 2.5 lead over the hosts as the United States looked a bit out of sorts in their quest to re-take the Cup. The morning’s foursomes were particularly defeating as Europe stormed out to a 3-1 lead so technically speaking the Americans were able to stand a bit taller during the afternoon’s four-ball matches.
From an American standpoint points were earned
- Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele (full point in foursomes)
- Justin Thomas and Cameron Young (full point in four-ball)
- Patrick Cantlay and Sam Burns (half-point in four-ball)
Team Europe received strong performances from their heavy hitters. Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose, Ludvig Aberg all played well… their team is regarded in high esteem for a reason. Notably, the world’s number one player in Scottie Scheffler failed to record a point through either round on Friday.
As the Europeans are the current holders of the Cup the United States will need 14.5 points by Sunday’s end to take it back. Some simple math will tell you that they need 12 more between Saturday (which is the same format as Friday) and Sunday’s singles matches.
Nothing is impossible and the Ryder Cup is full of theatrics. You can’t count anyone out.
But the European blue certainly feels like the heavy favorite after Friday’s rounds.
