Dayton Price had a long road to the Kia Open
Dayton Price’s start last week in the Kia Open was a part of his long road to recovery
This idea was on display last week at the Kia Open on PGA Tour Americas as Dayton Price made his first start in any professional event. You see, Dayton has had quite the road to last week’s tournament.
Four years ago, the golf team at the University of the Southwest was tragically in an auto collision that took the lives of the team’s coach and six of its players. Dayton and his teammate Hayden Underhill were the only two survivors. Dayton suffered severe 3rd and 4th degree burns over 44% of his body which resulted in 86 days in hospital, most of those days in ICU Burn Unit at The University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas where it was originally thought that his legs would have to be amputated.
The long road to recovery led Dayton’s golf career to Wilfrid Laurier University (Waterloo, Ontario), near his hometown of Hamilton, Ontario. Last year at the Ontario University Athletics Conference Championship, Price won the individual title and led to the team title. And last week he was in the Kia Open.
Dayton missed the cut last week, but that he was even in the field is a testament to the journey he has been on. He is a survivor and is very grateful to be one.
