With the rain quite literally washing out most of Friday’s play at the Ryder Cup in Newport, Wales, the captains have agreed on a new schedule in an effort to finish on Sunday.
Ryder Cup 2010: New Format, Schedule Following Friday’s Rain
The new schedule calls for six alternate shot matches in the second session instead of the normal four, and two alternate shot and four better ball matches in the third session. That means all players will be out on the course for both sessions.
None of Friday’s matches were finished (U.S. was leading in two, and all-square in another, with Europe leading the fourth match). The plan is to finish the fourball matches on Saturday, then play the six alternate shot matches, then the four better ball matches ... and then cram in all 12 singles matches after that, on Sunday (hopefully).
It's somewhat confusing, And it's certainly a lot of golf in a short amount of time. But perhaps the most important result of this format change is that all 12 players will be golfing.
--The 2nd session will comprise six foursome matches.
--The 3rd session will comprise 2 foursome and 4 fourball matches.
--This will be followed by the 12 singles matches.
All 28 points are still up-for-grabs.
And since Sunday’s forecast is calling for rain, we could still be looking at a Monday finish. Hopefully between now and then the U.S. upgrades their rain gear.
A big benefit in all of this for the golf fan watching at home is that there will be more live golf than previously planned.
