Tiger Woods has announced his withdrawal from the Players Championship for the second consecutive year. Given that he had been battling a nagging knee injury, as well as an ailing Achilles tendon, the move doesn’t come as a major surprise. From the PGA Tour website:
Tiger Woods’ Knee Injury, Strained Achilles Likely Forced Withdrawal From Players Championship 2011
Woods played his first five holes in 5 over – including a triple bogey at the fourth hole — and was visibly limping as he shot 42 on the front nine. He is nursing a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee and a strained left Achilles tendon.
We don’t yet have confirmation that these injuries are the reasons for Woods’ withdrawal. Given that Woods, a noted golf enthusiast, skipped the Wells Fargo event with these injuries, however, it’s probably a safe bet. Woods was seen limping in the locker room after leaving the course.
