Phil Mickelson Surging Up Players Championship 2011 Leaderboard With 5-Under Front 9

After what he described as a disappointing first round at The Players Championship 2011, Phil Mickelson is quickly moving up the leaderboard on day 2.

Mickelson started with a pair of birdies on his third and fourth holes of the second round, then notched an eagle on the par 5 16th, followed by another birdie on the 18th, to finish a 5-under front 9. Phil is now three strokes back of the leader.

Elsewhere around The Players Championship, David Toms is the new tournament leader at 9-under. He’s added three birdies to his 6-under from the opening round to overtake Nick Watney. Two others — Graeme McDowell and Alvaro Quiros — are now tied with Watney in second place at 8-under. Watney gets his crack at the course when he tees of at 1:28 p.m. ET.
