Phil Mickelson began the day with a five-under score through nine holes, but he couldn’t sustain it, and now David Toms is the frontrunner in the 2011 Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass. Toms followed his opening round of 66 with an equally impressive 68 on Friday, including six birdies over the course of his round.
Players Championship 2011 Leaderboard: Phil Mickelson Falls Apart, David Toms Takes Lead
For Phil Mickelson, on the other hand, his day took a turn for the worse after his first nine holes had golf fans thinking we could be in for something special. Mickelson began his day on the back nine, where he shot 5-under, and rocketed up the leaderboard. On the front, though, he had more trouble.
Four bogeys in nine holes had Mickelson crashing back to earth, and sitting a full nine shots off the lead heading into the weekend. So much for saving The Players Championship in Tiger’s absence... As for the rest of the leaderboard, Graeme McDowell, Steve Stricker, and Nick Watney are in a three-way tie for second place at 8-under, and 2011 Masters winner Jason Day is lurking within striking distance at 5-under, himself.
