Players Championship Leaderboard Update: Nick Watney, Graeme McDowell Share Third Round Lead

The skies have cleared at TPC Sawgrass, allowing Nick Watney and Graeme McDowell to surge up the leaderboard in the third round of the Players Championship.

Watney, who came into Saturday’s third round one shot back of leader David Toms, birdied his first two holes to move to 11-under for the tournament, then was joined at that mark by McDowell, who made birdie on three of his first five holes.

Watney and McDowell are taking advantage of receptive greens after a lengthy rain delay that threatened to wipe out much of today’s third round; Toms is decidedly not. Through four holes, Toms has four pars, leaving him looking up the leaderboard at players making red numbers.

Two of those players going low were Peter Hanson and Martin Kaymer. But Hanson, after threatening to jump into contention on the basis of just one under-par round, fell back slightly with “just” a 6-under 66 to put him at 6-under for the Players Championship, and Kaymer bogeyed three consecutive holes to derail a round that found him 5-under for Saturday after seven holes. Kaymer’s still 3-under for his third round, and three shots back of the leaders, but he had made it to 10-under at his lowest.
