When the U.S. Open tees off at Congressional Country Club from on June 16, there’s a good chance Stuart Appleby will not be there. The 40-year-old is poised to miss the Open for the first time since 1996 after narrowly failing to book a spot through sectional qualifying this week.
US Open 2011: Appleby Likely To Miss Open For First Time Since 1996
The 85th-ranked Appleby has missed the cut seven times in his last eight events and will likely be putting all of his attention into competing in this weekend’s St. Jude Classic at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee.
His only chance of booking a place in the US Open? Finishing in either first or second place in Memphis and hoping his ranking moves into the world’s top 50, where he’d earn an automatic berth.
Appelby remains upbeat and recently tweeted, “Missed (qualification) for US Open next week by a shot or two. Things are on the improve, patience a must now.”
