2011 U.S. Open Leaderboard Results From Day One

In his first major tournament since the blowup at Augusta in the final round of The Masters, Rory McIlroy is back at the top of the leaderboard after firing a first round 65 in the 2011 US Open. McIlroy had a superb day, and had a legitimate chance to tie or best the low-round in a major, currently set at 63. Instead, the young Irishman settled for 65 after a few putts failed to drop, though his 6-under score left him three shots clear of the field.

Stalking McIlroy is a name that should be familiar: Charl Schwartzel. It’s The Masters all over again, at least in the early-goings of the US Open. Schwartzel was able to take advantage of McIlroy’s disastrous final round at Augusta to win the green jacket earlier this year. Y.E. Yang is also three shots back after a first round 68.

Sergio Garcia, former Open Championship winner Louis Oosthuizen and four others are four shots back of McIlroy at 2-under for the tournament. It’s been tough going at Congressional Country Club through the first round, with only 33 competitors at or below par.

The field gets back at it on Friday morning for the second round of the 2011 US Open. Here’s a look at the top of the leaderboard ahead of Friday’s round. For the full leaderboard, head over to the US Open website.
