Vijay Singh was one of several golfers to earn spots in the upcoming 2011 British Open on Monday, although he may not play due to back trouble.
British Open 2011: Vijay Singh, Four Others Earn Spots; Tiger Woods’ Status Uncertain
Webb Simpson, J.B. Holmes, Steve Marino and Yuta Ikeda received spots as well.
Singh withdrew from the AT&T National on Saturday after experiencing problems with his back. It’s not yet clear whether he’ll be able to play.
In the meantime, Brendan Jones is the first reserve, and will wait to see whether Tiger Woods will be able to play in the Open. Woods is dealing with injuries to his knee and Achilles and is not sure whether he’s going to play, but it sounds doubtful:
“I don’t know and that’s the hard part,” he said. “That’s what is killing because I don’t have a timetable. I’m just taking it one day at a time and that’s kind of hard.
“As of right now I’ve got to go day by day in my training sessions. We push it each day to see how it is, and the next day if I recover right we push it a bit harder.”
