The 2011 Solheim Cup, the equivalent to the Ryder Cup in women’s golf, kicks off on Friday morning from Killeen Castle, Ireland. A team made up of the best players in the United States takes on a team made up of the best players in Europe in a three-day match play competition with a points scoring system.

The 2011 Solheim Cup starts on Friday in Ireland, with the United States having four of the top 10 golfers in the world.

Much like the Ryder Cup, the first two days feature two sessions of team play each day, while the third day features one session of singles matches. There are 28 points available and the defending team (the United States) only needs 14 points and a tie to retain the cup. Europe will need 14 1/2 points to win.
Europe has the No. 2 golfer in the world, Suzann Pettersen, while World No. 3 Christie Kerr is the highest ranked American competing in the Solheim Cup. Paula Creamer, Brittany Lincicome and Stacy Lewis are the other American women in the top 10 in the world, and all are participating in the tournament. Pettersen is the only European golfer ranked in the top 10 in the world.
Play begins at 7:40 am BST, 2:40 pm EST on Friday. Golf Channel will broadcast every day of the tournament live, in its entirety.
