Nine holes into the Austrian Open, John Daly was looking great. Shooting a 4-under 32, he was on his way to making a run at the latest European Tour event.
John Daly Pulls A John Daly, Quits Austrian Open
The second round, however, marked the return of the John Daly we’ve all come to know, love and expect.
With three holes to go, Daly up and quit after shooting a quadruple-bogey seven and disputing an official’s penalty.
Daly hit his tee shot on the hole into the water. After the splash, Daly threw one of his clubs into the water. Daly made what he thought was a double bogey after the subsequent drop. A European Tour official, however, did not agree. He questioned the legality of the drop Daly took, saying the American would likely be assessed a 2-stroke penalty for it. Daly chose to withdraw instead of continue with the penalty.
Quadruple-bogey? Thrown club in water? Qutting mid-tournament?
He really “Dalyed” this one.
