During halftime at Monday night’s NFL contest between the San Diego Chargers and Denver Broncos, PGA veteran Phil Mickelson had a 100-yard wedge shot to a makeshift green on the field for a chance at $1 million for charity. Unfortunately for Lefty, his shot went more like 120 yards.
Phil Mickelson wins $50,000 for charity on Monday Night Football
Phil Mickelson had a chance to win $1 million for charity Monday night during halftime at Monday Night Football. Instead, he did the most “Phil Mickelson” thing ever and screwed up a wedge shot.
While still raising $50,000 for First Book in the KPMG Chip 4 Charity promotion, Mickelson could have raised anywhere from $100,000 to $1 million for the charity had he hit one of the interior rings on the “green.”
Shades of Medinah echoed throughout QualComm Stadium as golf fans uniformly joked about another errant wedge shot during Sunday at the Ryder Cup last month. In that match, Mickelson would ultimately lose a full point to Europe’s Justin Rose en route to the United States crapping down their leg in the event.
“I must have had a little bit more adrenaline because the ball was a little bit long. I thought I hit a pretty good shot but it flew long,” Mickelson said following his halftime shot.
“I haven’t had this experience. This is an amazing experience. In golf, we don’t get this,” he said. “The 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale has nothing on this. This was awesome, seeing the Jumbotron with my picture, as I’m looking up taking the shot, that was unique. That was something that was pretty cool.”
Mickelson’s ties to San Diego athletics has deepened over the last year as he is included in an investment group hoping to purchase the San Diego Padres.
Promotion officials did share that the $50,000 raised will be used to purchase roughly 20,000 books for children.
