Perhaps Davis Love III is trying to show he should have been playing been playing in the Ryder Cup instead of captaining the United States team, as he’s off to a strong start in the McGladrey Classic near his home on St. Simon’s Island in Georgia.

Love is one of several golfers participating in the event who lives in the area, and he is off to a strong start with five birdies on his first nine holes. He bogeyed his 10th to put him at 4-under, which is still good enough for the early lead in the first round at Sea Island. Love was a star earlier in his career, winning the PGA Championship at just 23, but hasn’t won a major since and his last PGA Tour win came in 2008.

David Toms and Gary Christian highlight a group of five a stroke back of love, with Jim Furyk the most prominent of 10 golfers at 2-under. Many golfers still have yet to start their rounds in the first day of competition in the Fall Series event.
