McGladrey Classic leaderboard: Greg Owen finishes at 6-under for lead

Englishman Greg Owen led the charge in Thursday’s first round of The McGladrey Classic in Sea Island, Ga.

Greg Owen stands alone atop the leaderboard at 6-under 64 after his first round of The McGladrey Classic on Thursday. The Englishman’s has a one-shot lead on four players who are tied for second place in Sea Island, Ga.

Owen hit four birdies on the front nine and didn’t bogey a hole in his strong start.

Americans Zach Johnson, Davis Love III, and David Toms are on the heels of Owen at 5-under, as is New Zealand’s Danny Lee. All five of those players have finished the first round.

The success from Love III and Johnson isn’t surprising. Both are familiar with the Seaside course as Love III resides in Sea Island, Ga., while Johnson lives in nearby St. Simons Island, Ga.

Marco Dawson, Joe Durant and Charles Howell III still have at least a third of the course to play and sit at 4-under 66. Several other players at 3-under have up to nine holes left to play in the first round and could change Thursday’s final leaderboard.
