Louis Oosthuizen and Adam Scott are tied with a 7-under 65 for the lead after Thursday’s first round of the WGC-HSBC Champions event.

Americans Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson are a shot behind the duo at the Sheshan International par 72 course in China. In a tie for third place, the duo is tied with Sweden’s Peter Hanson and Ireland’s Shane Lowry at 6-under.

Oosthuizen had his way with the 7,143-yard course by avoiding mistakes. The South African had seven birdies and no bogeys in the opening round of play. Meanwhile, Scott was more streaky. He ended his day with two birdies and an eagle on a par 5 hole nine. His start on the back nine was not as smooth, as the Australian bogeyed on his eighth hole of the day before recovering with a strong finish.

Other notable performances on Thursday came from American Dustin Johnson, who finished with a 5-under 67, and last year’s WGC-HSBC winner, German Martin Kaymer, who likewise finished the first 18 holes at 4-under.
