The Masters 2013: Guan, 14, on pace to reach Augusta

The 2013 Masters is more than five months away, but for 14-year old Guan Tianlang his Augusta dream is well underway.

Next season’s Masters tournament very well could include a 14-year old player for the first time in history.

China’s Guan Tianlang holds a five-stroke lead after two rounds at the 2012 Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in Thailand. The winner of the tournament earns a coveted invitation to the Masters, just as the winner of the US Amateur.

While the potential of playing in the first major of 2013 is beyond exciting, Guan is showing his maturity by keeping his emotions under control and instead focusing on the task at hand.

“[Playing in the 2013 Masters] would be amazing but, for now, I need to focus on my game this weekend. To be leading the tournament is good for me and good for Chinese golf, especially as China will be hosting the event next year.”

Italian Matteo Manassero is the current record holder for being the youngest Masters participant in history at 16-years old. His attempt at the Green Jacket debuted in 2010.
