Shell Houston Open 2012: Phil Mickelson 1 Shot Behind Leaders Louis Oosthuizen And Brian Davis

As the second round progresses at Redstone Golf Club in Humble, Englishman Brian Davis has surged to the top of the leaderboard, shooting a 65 in his second round and is in the clubhouse at 11 under. He is only one of a handful of players to finish so far, and with soft conditions, there will surely be other low numbers. Davis has had a relatively unremarkable career, and is perhaps best known for calling a penalty on himself on the final hole at Harbour Town that handed Jim Furyk a victory at the Heritage.

Matching Davis at -11 is former British Open winner Louis Oosthuizen, who is six under through 16 holes. First-round leader and defending champion Phil Mickelson is just one shot off the lead and three under through 16 holes. Two shots off the lead is Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainey, the former Big Break contestant and swashbuckling South Carolinian.

Former Houston Cougar Fred Couples is seven shots off the lead at four under, but he will make the cut and extend his record streak at the Houston Open to 19 consecutive made-cuts. Several players in the top 20 have still not started their second round, so the cut will not be made until Saturday.
