Luke Donald to Lose World No. 1 Ranking after T32 Finish at RBC Heritage Classic

A second-straight even-par 71 gives Luke Donald a tie for 32nd place at the RBC Heritage Classic -- presuming nobody still on the course drops four strokes in on their back nine -- meaning Donald will lose his status as the World No. 1 to Rory McIlroy. Donald needed to finish eighth or better to retain the title, but finished with a +2, seven strokes off of the -5 he would have needed to finish that high. Donald has been near the top of the leaderboard his past three years at Harbour Town, but barely made the cut and couldn’t play well enough to hold his title.

Donald held the ranking for 40 weeks before relinquishing it to McIlroy in March but, after two weeks, he retook the spot with a victory at the Transitions Championship. He and Donald will probably be duking it out for the slot going forward. McIlroy didn’t play this week and won’t until the Wells Fargo Championship in three weeks.
