2012 Valero Texas Open: Who The Heck Is Matt Every?
Matt Every is your first-round leader in Texas, and now holds the course record at the TPC San Antonio. But what do we really know about this guy?
Every isn’t your typical PGA touring professional. He likes to keep his practice sessions short and focused, and he often scoffs at his compatriots who endlessly tinker with their golf swings before and after tournament rounds. His decision to not work with a swing coach certainly places him in the minority of touring pros, but that didn’t seem to matter much to Every on Thursday.
After all, the man now holds the course record at the TPC San Antonio after firing a 63 in his opening round.

So who the heck is this guy? He’s been around a lot longer than you would suspect, having turned professional in 2006. Every, 28, was born in Daytona Beach, Fla., and eventually earned a collegiate golf scholarship to the University of Florida. During his time in college, Every would become a three-time selection as a first-team All-SEC player and a four-time All-American.
From there, Every would turn his attention to the amateur circuit en route to earning a spot in the 2005 US Open field at Pinehurst.
After turning professional, Every competed on the Golf Channel’s The Big Break. He would later play on the Nationwide Tour, where he recorded his only win as a professional at the Nationwide Tour Championship in October 2009.
Every would also be the subject of some controversy in 2010 as one of three men arrested in Iowa on charges of possession of a controlled substance. This point would seemingly become fodder for discussion for the Golf Channel’s Kelly Tilghman earlier this year, making for one of the more awkward moments in golf journalism.
Regardless, Every is in the driver’s seat in Texas leading into today’s second round. If he can hold on to his lead throughout the weekend, he very well may be able to capture his first PGA TOUR victory ... thus giving everyone another topic to talk about when discussing Matt Every.
