Phil Mickelson Moves Up Masters Leaderboard After Rough Start At Augusta National

Phil Mickelson didn’t let a triple-bogey at No. 10 faze him on Thursday, and he battled back to a respectable position by the end of his second round. Mickelson began the day at 2-over for the tournament, closer to the cut line than the lead. He quickly made up strokes, getting to even par by the fourth hole, before struggling once again.

By the turn, Mickelson was back to 1-over, and with a bogey on 11 he was back where he started -- at 2-over for the tournament and going the wrong way. But over the next six holes, he closed strong, carding birdies and pars while eliminating bogeys.

A birdie on 12 put Mickelson back at 1-over and another at 13 got him back to even par. Mickelson added a birdie on the par-5 15th, then another superb birdie on No. 18 -- a hole that’s been giving players fits all day.

Mickelson carded a 4-under 68, getting back into the red numbers and back into contention. He’s hanging around, despite his struggles, and perhaps having to battle back will give him something to build on as The Masters heads into the weekend.

The leaders -- Fred Couples and Jason Dufner -- are both at 5-under and in the clubhouse. The cut line, as of now, is 5-over.
