Heading into Saturday’s third round, Rory McIlroy looked like the odds-on favorite to win the 2012 Masters. He was just one shot off the lead at 4-under par, behind Jason Dufner and Fred Couples. While McIlroy suffered a Sunday collapse at last year’s Masters, the first three rounds of that tournament and the first two rounds of this year’s tournament indicated that he knew how to play the course. He won the U.S. Open in dominating fashion, wire to wire, putting to bed any concerns about whether or not he could close out a major.

Saturday did not end up going according to plan for McIlroy. He is almost certainly out of the running for the Green Jacket. He is 10 shots off the pace, thanks to his 77 on Saturday. McIlroy played the back nine a solid 1-under par, but couldn’t overcome his very poor 42 on the front nine. But hey, if he can shoot a 62 and a lot of people screw up, who knows what could happen.
