2012 Masters: Phil Mickelson Prepared For ‘Something Special’ In Final Round

Phil Mickelson had a terrific Saturday, complete with an eagle and some incredible birdies, but after his round, he said the 66 he fired (which followed a Friday 68 after a 2-over opening round) was just preparation for what should shape up for a wild Sunday.

“This was a really fun day,” Mickelson said. “It gave me‑‑ it gives me an opportunity to make something special happen tomorrow. As great and as fun a round as this was, it just makes it possible to have something really special tomorrow.”

“I still have to go out tomorrow and do it,” he continued. “I still have to play some great golf on a tough golf course with some tough pin placements. But having that opportunity to be in the final group here at the Masters on Sunday, it’s the greatest feeling in professional golf.”

One reporter asked Mickelson if he was biding his time while shooting a 74 on Thursday, but Mickelson assured everyone that he was doing no such thing.

“That was not my intention,” he said. “I felt like with being only two‑under and so many guys ahead of me that I needed to make something happen the front nine ... I was trying to make something happen on the front and just didn’t. But the great thing about that is you know that you have the back nine and that you know you have some birdie and eagle opportunities, and I was able to capitalize on those birdie opportunities.”

Mickelson tees off with leader Peter Hanson in the final group at 2:40 p.m. Sunday.

All times are Eastern. You can view the live Masters leaderboard here.
