2012 Masters: Bubba Watson Might Never Need To Find A New Job

Bubba Watson has never had a golf lesson, which is well-known by now. To anyone who watched any of the coverage of The Masters on Sunday, this isn’t exactly news. What may be news, however, is exactly how easy-going Watson is about golf and his swing. The degree to which he isn’t bothered by potential downturns in form is astonishing.

This is summed up well with a quote from Watson, talking to John Paul Newport of the Wall Street Journal a few weeks before The Masters. “I never will take a lesson. If I start playing bad golf, I’ll just have to find me a new job.”

When he uttered that remark, Watson was not a Masters champion. He had won three times on the PGA Tour and lost a playoff in the PGA Championship to finish as the runner-up. He was well known even to casual golf fans who only watch the major tournaments, but there are a lot of solid pros who fit that description, never win a major, experience a case of the yips and fade away into obscurity.

Life is different for guys who win majors. Obscure players with one-tenth of Watson’s talent that more or less luck into major wins often go on to make money in golf for nearly a decade afterwards, even if they never make serious noise in a major ever again.

Bubba Watson’s unconventional mechanics and lack of training might lead him to stop playing truly spectacular golf someday, but there’s a good chance he won’t ever need to find a new job after his performance this week at Augusta National.
