It will probably be of little comfort to Angel Cabrera, but the splashy nine (that’s 6-over, golf fans!) he made on the par-3 17th at TPC Sawgrass on Thursday won’t go in the record books as the highest score posted on the renowned island venue. No, Bob Tway, who signed for a 12 on the 17th in 2005, holds that title.
Angel Cabrera Becomes First Casualty At No. 17
As for Cabrera, who was having an up-and-down opening round until he got to the 17th, did his best “Tin Cup” imitation when he lost three balls in the water. That included, according to Golf Channel, his tee shot from 124 yards coming up 15 yards short and two near-whiffs with a sand wedge from the drop area.
Cabrera finished his round at 6-over -- an even dozen behind the 18-hole leader in the clubhouse, Blake Adams.
