Crowne Plaza Invitational 2012 Preview: Dufner, Mahan Seek Third 2012 PGA Tour Victory

With Jason Dufner grabbing his second PGA Tour victory of the 2012 season last week at the Byron Nelson Championship, the leading storyline entering the Crowne Plaza Invitational has been set:

Can either Dufner or Hunter Mahan, two rising stars in professional golf, win their third Tour event before June?

In a game that’s seeing more and more players consistently drive the ball more than 300 yards off the tee, the two most successful players on the young season are two who pride themselves on accuracy in the fairway and precision with the putter.

Dufner is fifth on the Tour in Proximity to Hole, while Mahan is fifth in Greens in Regulation.

While these two will certainly be the focal point of the first two days of play at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, a course that has held this tournament in all 66 years of its existence, Dufner and Mahan will certainly be challenged by a variety of Tour veterans and youngbloods

The Golf Channel begins coverage of Round 1 Thursday at 3:00 p.m. ET. David Toms won the event last year and is back to defend his title.

Some key first-round parings are as follows:

David Toms, Zach Johnson, Sergio Garcia: Toms and Johnson won the last two Crowne Plaza Invitationals.

Jason Dufner, Matt Kuchar, Rickie Fowler: The last four PGA Tour tournaments have been won by this group.

Bill Haas, Nick Watney, Davis Love III: Two young American golfers get an opportunity to impress the 2012 Ryder Cup captain.
