The second Tour stop on the two-week Dallas swing is underway, and several players in the morning tee times are going out with extremely low numbers. Zach Johnson, who enters the week in form, posted a 5-under-par 30 on a first nine that feature five birdies and no bogeys. Johnson was in contention throughout the week at The Players, and he continued his solid play to start the week at Colonial. He went on a tear on holes 13 through 16, getting hot with the putter and converting four straight birdies.
Crowne Plaza Invitational 2012: Zach Johnson Fires 30 On 1st 9, Ties Chris DiMarco For Early Lead
After Johnson posted five birdies in the first seven holes, there was a “29 watch” for about 45 minutes but the former Masters champ had pars on the final two holes to go out in 30. He won on the same course two years ago, and it has always suited his eye. There are plenty of birdie opportunities ahead of him, as he will play his second nine on the front side at Colonial. A round of 60 could be in play.
Veteran Chris DiMarco is tied with Johnson at 5-under, posting five birdies through the first 11 holes. DiMarco is past his prime and has wandered in the wilderness the past few years, but he has the talent to contend for one week. Speaking of wanderers, John Daly is remarkably on the first page of the leaderboard at 2-under through his first 10 holes.
