2012 U.S. Open: Projected Cut Means Rory McIlroy, Bubba Watson Could Miss Weekend

The projected cut after Day 2 at the 2012 U.S. Open is currently set at 8-over. Several big names are in serious danger of heading home from the Olympic Club earlier than they would have hoped. Last year’s U.S. Open winner Rory McIlroy (10-over overall), and this year’s Masters winner Bubba Watson (9-over) both find themselves on the wrong side of the line.

McIlroy finished at 3-over Friday after shooting 7-over Thursday. He bogeyed 13 of his 36 holes played over two days, hitting just 53.57 percent of his greens in regulation. He recorded just three birdies, two of which came Friday on holes No. 7 and No. 17.

Watson still has time to right his own ship. He is 1-over on through seven holes Friday. He has already bypassed holes 1-6, which are considered by many to be the stretch of the course, giving him 11 holes to whittle his way down to 8-over or below.

Phil Mickelson has been hovering near the cut line throughout the day, but a birdie on No. 7 gave him some breathing room, putting him at 7-over overall.
