Shortly after deflecting the fan who crashed his trophy ceremony on Sunday night, newly crowned U.S. Open winner Webb Simpson posted a photo on Twitter of himself with the guy who stormed the dais as Bob Costas was intoning solemnly into the microphone.

“My new friend,” Simpson tweeted about the man who goes by the handle “Jungle Bird” and describes himself as an “activist dedicated to raising awareness of deforestation.”
As SB Nation’s Jon Bois noted Sunday, Jungle Bird has squawked his way into several situations, including a Monty Python-like near-audience with the Queen of England. And in case you were wondering where “the gendarmes,” as Costas called U.S. Open officials, hauled JB off to, it was to the nearest jailhouse. The Birdman told TMZ, however, that San Francisco’s finest chuckled along with him and matched him cackle for cackle.
In the end, the USGA decided not to press charges, but the Royal & Ancients may want to be on the lookout to keep the guy in the Union Jack knit cap from breaching security at the British Open as easily as he did at The Olympic Club.
Jungle Bird, by the way, posted a message Monday on his Facebook page for Simpson, who bemusedly brushed off the intrusion with a good-natured “Enjoy the jail cell, pal.”
“Congratulations to Webb Simpson on winning the US Open and a big thank you for being a good sport!”
