Fred Couples Leads Senior PGA Championship

While many golf fans will remain fixated on Tiger Woods and the PGA Tour’s AT&T National this week, the Champions Tour’s Fred Couples is busy holding his own at the 2012 Senior PGA Championship.

Battling a bad back and sweltering temperatures in Pittsburgh, Couples managed to birdie his final three holes of the day to record a 7-under 63 to take the tournament lead at 11-under overall. Couples is the defending champion since winning the event last year at Westchester Country Club in Harrison, N.Y.

Couples saw the heat as a good thing for his back.

“The heat helps,” said Couples following his round. “I have some heat on my back to start the day, and then being hot and humid certainly was a good thing.”

Also in the field, Greg Norman fired a 1-over 71 in his second round to fall to 4-over for the tournament. This is the first event Norman has played since 2009.
