As anyone who’s ever played the game knows, hitting the links can be injurious to your back, knees, and assorted tendons. But a certain California hacker makes you want to don full body armor (and not the kind Tom Brady shills for) for a round of full-contact golf.
When Golfers Go Berserk (Hey Dude, That’s My Ball!)
According to reports, Michael Payne blew a gasket while playing at Casta Del Sol Golf Course in Mission Viejo on Thursday. Payne allegedly got into it on the 18th hole when he accused the foursome in front of him of stealing his golf balls. A heated argument ensued, and police charged Payne with smacking one golfer in the face and clocking another on the wrist with a golf club, according to ABC 7 in Los Angeles.
“It started as a dispute over golf protocol and it did end in violence,” is not a sentence you expect to hear at your local muni, but that’s how Orange County bureau chief Eileen Frere summed up the situation.
No word on what club Payne used, but it was enough to get him arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and assault and battery, Orange County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Jim Amormin told the ABC affiliate.
Oh, and this from CBS Los Angeles: “There was also at least one report of a man atop of golf cart swinging his golf club at another golfer.”
Talk about a protocol violation.
