A number of players are deep into red numbers at the 2012 British Open. Phil Mickelson was not one of them over the first two days of the tournament, and as a result, he ended up well below the cut line, which landed at 3-over.
2012 British Open Cut Line: 3-Over Number Frees Up Phil Mickelson’s Weekend
The top 70 players and ties make it to the weekend at the Open Championship, meaning that the 16 players tied for 68th place at 3-over made the cut at Royal Lytham & St. Annes.
Mickelson, who was 3-over after his Thursday first round, struggled through a miserable 8-over 78 in his second round. He was nowhere near the cut line, ending up at 11-over for the Open. That means he’s just as far from the 19-over mark that Ian Keenan posted to end up dead last as he was from playing the weekend.
It’s Mickelson’s fourth missed cut at the British Open, and first since 2007.
Fortunately for Phil, he was far from the only major champion to bow out before the weekend: Y.E. Yang, Charl Schwartzel, Tom Lehman, David Duval, Stewart Cink, Todd Hamilton, Martin Kaymer, Darren Clarke, Trevor Immelman, Justin Leonard and Angel Cabrera all joined Mickelson in making early exits.
