Greenbrier Classic 2012: Vijay Singh Leads After 1st Round, Tiger Woods & Phil Mickelson Over Par

Veteran Tour pro Vijay Singh holds a one-shot lead after the first round of the 2012 Greenbrier Classic. Singh went low on Thursday, firing a 63 to come in at 7-under. The Old White Course at The Greenbrier is known for yielding some low scores, most notably Stuart Appelby’s 59 in a Sunday final round during the inaugural 2010 event. While Jim Justice and the Tour have toughened it up since then, the classic layout is still susceptible to plenty of red numbers. On Thursday, it was Singh who took advantage with six birdies on the back side for an inward 30.

One shot back of Singh is the trio of Jeff Maggert, Martin Flores, and Jonathan Byrd at 6-under. Maggert spends his time on both the Champions Tour and PGA Tour and has experienced success on both circuits this season. He made plenty of noise in Memphis at the FedEx St. Jude Classic and his 64 on Thursday sets him up for a potential weekend run. Byrd remains one of the top American golfers and is consistently on the first page of leaderboards. But he’s still looking for a win after his hot start to the 2011 season, with his last win coming at Kapalua.

U.S. Open Champion Webb Simpson is two shots off the lead at 5-under. Simpson spent last week back home with his pregnant wife but he’s back out on Tour and playing with Tiger Woods in West Virginia this week. Woods shot an underwhelming 71 on Thursday, struggling with the flatstick. Phil Mickelson matched Woods with a 1-over 71 but Lefty was wild off the tee, hitting a spectator in the head at one point during his mediocre opening round.
