The Americans are on the board after Dustin Johnson defeated Nicolas Colsaerts to earn the first point for Davis Love III. The match was all-square through 13 holes but the long-hitting South Carolinian won three straight holes to wrap it up on the 16th green. Johnson is the first American since Phil Mickelson in 1995 to go an undefeated 3-0 at the Ryder Cup. He drained a crucial putt on the 17th green on Saturday to keep the Americans ahead by four points and picked up the back-nine success on Sunday. Johnson has struggled in team events in the past, but he was clutch partnering with Matt Kuchar and carried that over into singles.

Johnson’s win momentarily pushed the American lead to 11-10. The U.S. needs 4.5 points to win the Cup but the Euros have blitzed them early, earning the first four points of the day at Medinah. The European team is dressed in navy to honor Seve Ballesteros, the inspiring leader of their team for so many decades. There may be a little Seve magic in the air on Sunday in Chicago, but Johnson did his best to briefly stop the momentum.
