The first round of the 2012 BMW Championship, the third event in golf’s FedEx Cup postseason series, has finished with marquee names at the top of the leaderboard. Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods were paired for the day, and they did not let the fans down.
BMW Championship Leaderboard: Rory McIlroy Finishes Day 1 On Top
McIlroy finished in a four-way tie for first place after shooting an opening-round 64. Webb Simpson, Bo Van Pelt and Graham DeLaet are even with McIlroy at 8-under.
Woods is one back of the leaders after knocking in nine birdies and two bogeys to finish with a 7-under 65. Vijay Singh sits tied with Tiger in fifth place after going 7-under on the final 10 holes, highlighted by an eagle to finish the front nine.
After a promising start, Phil Mickelson stumbled on the last seven holes. Lefty went 4-under through 11, before running into trouble with three bogeys and two birdies to finish at 69 for the day, leaving him tied for 29th.
Americans Ryan Moore and Robert Garrigus moved into the projected top 30 of the FedEx Cup standings with their rounds on Thursday. Moore is tied for seventh at the BMW, two back of the leaders at 6-under. Garrigus is three back in 10th place.
The top 30 players in FedEx Cup points advance to the Tour Championship.
