The Presidents Cup scores: International team mounting comeback late at Muirfield Village

The International team at the Presidents Cup is trying to make it a game heading into Sunday, rebounding from a 4-1 Four-ball rout to take the lead, at one point, in all five Foursomes matches.

It’s definitely a role reversal for each side, as the Americans had not won a Four-ball session in either the Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup in 17 years. The Internationals, on the other hand, have been crushed in the alternating shot Foursomes play through much of the history of this event. It’s the one area most responsible for the string of American blowouts wins.

The International team held their own in the first set of Foursomes, getting a 3-3 split. Both teams had little time to rest in between the second session, with Four-ball not ending until after 4 p.m. ET. After a third straight day with a significant rain delay, it’s unlikely that any of the five matches wraps up before darkness today. That could be unfortunate for an International team with all the momentum.

The Americans have fought back to square up two matches, and Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley have chopped one hole off their 3-down deficit. But the match board still has no red on it. The Americans are undoubtedly exhausted after what’s already been a 12-hour day. The Internationals are playing under the same conditions, however, and four of Nick Price’s five teams currently out on the course have played together in each and every session so far.

If things are to turn around for the USA, it would likely come from the Bradley-Mickelson group. They’ve hit hot streaks right at this point on the course in each of the last two sessions to add two points. They’re the duo who asked for a rest at last year’s Ryder Cup because they said they were burning themselves out, igniting the crowd through the first three sessions. This week they’re going to the distance and they’ve been on fire the last 24 hours so a third straight comeback is certainly doable.
