A grief-stricken Jason Day plans still to partner with Adam Scott in this week’s World Cup of Golf just days after losing eight relatives in the typhoon that devastated the Philippines last week.

Jason Day will team up with Adam Scott at Royal Melbourne for the World Cup of Golf.


“They found, I think, eight of our relatives. Six of them were children, and my grandma, and a couple more,” Day told reporters Monday after a practice session for the team event slated to start on Thursday, according to the Associated Press. “It’s such a tragedy. I feel for my mother.”
A Philippines native, Day’s mother Dening migrated to Australia about 30 years ago, said the AP.
The 27-year-old Australian will play with countryman Scott in the event to take place at Royal Melbourne, where Scott wrapped up the Australian Masters title on Sunday. Day issued a statement after the tragedy that killed thousands.
“I am deeply saddened to confirm that multiple members of my family lost their lives as the victims of Typhoon Haiyan. My family and I are thankful for all who have reached out with their prayers and concern. We feel devastated for all who have been affected by this horrific tragedy,” Day said. “While I understand the media’s interest in this matter and hope that any coverage can spread awareness to assist with the relief efforts that continue in the Philippines, I hope that all will respect my family’s privacy during this difficult time. I will have no further public comments at this time. Please pray for all who have suffered loss.”
With dual Masters champion Scott in the midst of a potential Australian Slam, after winning last week, the Australian PGA before that, and with the the Open on tap, the Aussie duo is favored to win the four-day event. Day expected to play in his country’s Open next week as well.
