WGC-HSBC Champions 2013 results: Dustin Johnson tears up back nine Sunday to seal win

Johnson is known for his big game off the tee, but his most important shot in Sunday’s win may have come greenside.

Dustin Johnson shot a 31 on the back nine in Sunday’s final round at the WGC-HSBC Champions 2013 at Sheshan International in Shanghai, China, and he won the tournament by three strokes at 24-under.

Johnson had built a six-stroke lead at one point in the tournament, but he found himself one shot behind Ian Poulter with six holes to play Sunday. Johnson birdied Nos. 13 and 14. After a par at the par-4 15th, Johnson teed off on the 288-yard par-4 16th with a 3 iron. His tee shot fell about 25 yards short of the green, and he pitched in for eagle.

Johnson then birdied No. 17 and sent in a par on the final hole, a par 5, to seal the victory. He finished Sunday’s round with a 6-under 66.

Poulter, who finished in second place at 21-under, also shot a 66 on Sunday, but he couldn’t keep up with Johnson on the back nine. A bogey at No. 15 offset birdies he had at Nos. 14 and 16.

Graeme McDowell finished alone in third at 20-under.
