After two rounds at the 2013 Shell Houston Open, Rory McIlroy hasn’t quite risen to the challenge given to him by Tiger Woods and was instead in danger of getting cut. The second-ranked golfer on the Official World Golf Ranking managed to make birdie on his second-to-last hole, reaching the cut line of 1-under par.
Shell Houston Open 2013 leaderboard: Rory McIlroy survives cut with better round on Friday
After finishing over par Thursday, Rory McIlroy managed to bounce back Friday. He narrowly made the 1-under cut after birdying his 17th hole. But he’s got work to do to get near the top of the leaderboard during the final two days of action.

While McIlroy struggled to find a rhythm on Friday, Steve Wheatcroft followed up his 5-under performance on Thursday with another on Friday, knocking in five birdies. After entering the day as the tournament leader, following a streak of eight birdies in 11 holes, D.A. Points is currently second behind Wheatcroft after shooting 11 consecutive pars in the first 11 holes.
Also dangerously close to not making the cut is Phil Mickelson, just one week after he was cut after two rounds at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. For the second day in a row, “Lefty” finished with a double-bogey on the par-four fifth hole, but recovered with three consecutive birdies on the back nine. With three holes to play, Mickelson is two strokes under par.
