There are 18 holes in the books, but Tiger Woods is still the overwhelming favorite to win the 2013 Masters, despite a four-shot deficit after the first round. According to Bovada, Tiger is still a 3/1 favorite, the same odds he carried on Monday morning at the start of Masters week. It’s not surprising, given that Woods did have a solid round and is still in fine position to win a fifth green jacket, and maybe even have the lead by the start of the weekend.

The player with the second-lowest odds is also not the current leader, as Dustin Johnson now comes in at 7/1 with 54 holes left to play. Johnson is the most talented young American player on Tour, but he’s made several mental errors that have cost him at the majors in his young career. Augusta has never been kind to DJ, but he carded his personal best round of 67 on Thursday and was bombing it off the tee -- the biggest asset of his game. In particular, his drive up and over the trees at No. 13 left him with a 9-iron into the par-5, which he finished with an eagle. If Dustin keeps making his way around the course like that, then these low odds will be justified.
Sergio Garcia, your 18-hole leader at 6-under, is listed behind Johnson at 9/1. It was one year ago that Garcia walked off Augusta on Sunday muttering to the press that he didn’t think he was capable of winning a major. After his impressive round on Thursday, Sergio reiterated his discomfort with the course but started talking about the “mental strength” to get through it. That’s not exactly a good sign for player who always seems to have a tenuous grip on the lead at the majors.
Rory McIlroy, who started the week with the second-lowest odds behind Tiger, is now listed with a large group at 20/1. Rory did not look good on the second nine on Thursday, stumbling into the clubhouse at even-par. Phil Mickelson, who started the week behind only Tiger and Rory, is now at 14/1, the fifth-lowest odds. Phil struggled early on Thursday, but did find his game on the second nine, picking up four birdies in a five-hole stretch. On a damp and soft course tomorrow, he’ll go pin-seeking and attempt to make a big charge up the board.
But the story of the opening round was 14-year old Tianlang Guan. The Chinese amateur phenom finished with an impressive 1-over round of 73, drawing the praise of his fellow competitors, including 61-year old playing partner Ben Crenshaw. Guan finished the round in style, sinking a putt from off the green with the flagstick in on No. 18, making birdie to stay inside the cut line. Making the cut seems like a distinct possibility at this point, but what about winning the whole thing at 14 years old? Not likely, Bovada lists him in a group at 1000/1.
