The second round of the 2013 Masters is underway, and despite some benign conditions, no one in the morning wave has made much of a move up the leaderboard. Augusta National was already playing fairly easy on Thursday, drawing the criticism of Phil Mickelson. But overnight thunderstorms should only soften up the course and lead to lower numbers on Friday, particularly in the morning before the wind has dried it all out.
Masters leaderboard 2013: Tianlang Guan opens with 3 pars, Sergio Garcia misses birdie
A 14-year old Tianlang Guan is off to another steady start on Friday.
But there has not been much movement on the first nine. Trevor Immelman, who may well have been wandering in some Georgia woods since his Masters win in 2008, started the day at 4-under. It was the first time we’d really heard from the South African since that win, but he’s obviously comfortable on this layout and he added another birdie early in his second round to get to 5-under, one shot off the lead. That stay at 5-under didn’t last long though, as Immelman gave one back with a bogey on the 5th hole.
Sergio Garcia is also out on the course, and he’s opened his second round with two pars. The Spaniard had a short six-foot birdie putt on the par-5 second hole, but it was a significant bender and Garcia missed the chance to take solo possession of the lead. Sergio did most of his work on the first nine on Thursday, but missing the chance to pick up a red number at the first par-5 will make it difficult to match that outward 32.
The player who everyone is watching early is 14-year old Tianlang Guan. The Chinese teenager is the youngest player ever in the Masters and he’s in position to make the weekend after an opening round 1-over 73. Guan will need to shoot around even-par to safely stay above a cut line that could creep up if the course is open to low scores, and so far he’s holding the line with three pars to start Friday.
Dustin Johnson, who was solo second at 5-under, has already dropped a shot with a bogey on No. 1. His playing partner, Fred Couples, also carded an opening bogey. Here’s a current snapshot of the leaderboard and other notables out on the course this morning:
| Score | Player | Thru |
| -6 | Sergio Garcia | 2 |
| -4 | Dustin Johnson | 1 |
| -4 | Trevor Immelman | 6 |
| -3 | Adam Scott | 2 |
| -3 | Fred Couples | 1 |
| 1 | Tianlang Guan | 3 |
