Tianlang Guan turned heads on Thursday with his opening round 73, but that may not be his only highlight of the tournament as he’s currently in position to make the cut.
Masters cut line: Tianlang Guan on edge of cut line
After an impressive opening round, 14-year-old Tianlang Guan is in position to make the weekend, although it’s going to be close.
Guan is 2-over through 12 holes on Friday, putting him at 3-over for the tournament. The Masters made a slight tweak to the cut rule this season with the top 50 plus ties and anyone within 10 strokes of the lead making the weekend. Guan is currently nine strokes behind the leader and in a tie for 55th place, but Masters.com currently projects the cut line at 5-over.
While Guan has a chance to make the cut, he doesn’t have much room for error. He opened his round with three-straight pars before dropping a shot with a bogey at No. 4. He fell to 3-over with a bogey at No. 7, but has settled down since. His short game was on display on No. 11 with a nifty up-and-down par save. The work in Amen Corner continued and he had a chance to get a stroke back on No. 12 after hitting an excellent tee shot, but he missed the short birdie putt to stay at 3-over.
Whether he makes the cut or not, Guan has been one of the stories of the 2013 Masters. The crowd and even his playing partners have shown plenty of support. As Guan’s group headed to the 12th tee, his playing partner and two-time Masters champion, Ben Crenshaw, yielded the spotlight to Guan, allowing him to soak in the applause.
