Masters cut line: Tianlang Guan still safe, Graeme McDowell, Webb Simpson in danger

The second round of the Masters is nearly complete which means all eyes are on the projected cut line. Jason Day, the current leader at 6-under, didn’t do any of the players on the fringe any favors as he pushed the cut line further down.

When Day birdied the 16th hole, it moved the projected cut line from 5-over to 4-over. That moved nine players at 5-over to the wrong side of the cut line. Graeme McDowell and Webb Simpson are two of the notable names who would now be on the outside looking in if the cut line stays at 4-over.

Whether or not McDowell and Simpson make the cut will depend on Day’s final couple holes, but we already know a few notable names will not be playing the weekend. At 6-over Louis Oosthuizen will be on the outside looking in. Ian Poulter at 6-over will also miss the cut. Barring a late comeback, Padraig Harrington will miss the cut as well as he’s currently 9-over through 16.

Tianlang Guan and defending Masters champion Bubba Watson are two players keeping an eye on Day’s final holes. Both sit at 4-over and just on the edge of the cut line. If Day were to finish his round at 7-under, both Watson and Guan would be on the outside looking in. Watson would be the first defending champion to miss the cut since 2004 while Guan would miss the cut thanks to a penalty stroke issued for slow play.
