With two holes to play at Augusta National, Tiger Woods is now 5-under par, three shots back of the lead.
Masters leaderboard: Tiger Woods moves to 5-under, but running out of chances
Tiger’s game is firing on the second nine, but he’s running out of holes to close what is now a smaller gap.
After an ugly start to his round, Tiger has not bogeyed a hole since No. 7, and has since added four birdies to climb all the way to 6-under. Things really started rolling at No. 9, and he moved through Amen Corner with several darts into the green, emerging from No. 13 in the red for the day.
Even with the field behind him stumbling around, Tiger absolutely cannot bogey a hole and he got through the slippery rebuilt green at No. 14 with no damage. The 15th hole was a must-birdie, the par-5 that could likely be the difference this week between a Woods win and another top 10 finish. He played it perfectly on Sunday, striping his drive down the middle and putting his approach shot, with a 6-iron, in the center of the green. He easily two-putted to add his fourth birdie in seven holes.
With that momentum, Tiger stepped to the tee at No. 16 and lofted his tee shot to the center of the green, letting the ball funnel down to the traditional right left pin location. It set up a great birdie opportunity for Woods, but his putt was well below the hole and it was another missed chance, joining near-misses at Nos. 11 and 12. That missed putt could put an end to any Sunday comeback fantasy.
