PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem says ‘No sanctions for Vijay Singh’

PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem announced that no sanctions will be filed against Vijay Singh despite admitting to using a banned substance.

The wait regarding Vijay Singh’s future on the PGA Tour is over. PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem announced Tuesday afternoon that no sanctions will be filed against Singh despite having admitted to using a banned substance -- deer antler spray -- on tour.

The announcement came during a press conference prior to this week’s Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow. The Golf Channel’s Jason Sobel summed up the lengthy declaration on Twitter shortly after Finchem left the podium.

Singh admitted to using IGF-1 -- an active ingredient in deer antler spray -- as a means to rehab from injury. After being told that the ingredient was on a list of banned substances for the PGA Tour, Singh stood by his remarks claiming ignorance of knowing he had broken any rule.

When the news first surfaced, he promptly withdrew from the Phoenix Open so as to not become a distraction. But he rejoined the Tour the next week at Pebble Beach, awaiting an eventual ruling on his use of the banned substance. There was some consternation among current and past pros about Singh being allowed to play while awaiting a punishment, particularly as it dragged on for nearly three months. That ruling finally came on Tuesday.
