2013 Valero Texas Open scores: Rory McIlroy surges into top 5

Rory McIlroy has had struggles as of late, even falling off the top spot in the Official World Golf Ranking, but he found a rhythm on Friday at the Valero Texas Open. After finishing the first round on Thursday with a par score, McIlroy sank birdies on each of the last three holes on Friday to finish the day five strokes under par, launching him past 40 players on the leaderboard into a tie for fifth.

The new leader of the tournament is Billy Horschel, who recovered from two bogeys in the first four holes to knock in six birdies and eight pars in the last 14 to take over the top spot at eight strokes under par.

Among the players that were unable to make the projected cut after two rounds were John Daly and James Driscoll. Daly finished round one four strokes over par and managed to earn back two strokes in round two, but a bogey on hole 17 sank his remaining hope at making the cut.

McIlroy’s score of 67 was tied for the best of the day with Charley Hoffman and K.J. Choi. Choi also jumped 40 places to a tie for fifth.The full leaderboard for the tournament and tee times for the third round can be found on PGATour.com.
