Tiger Woods had a rough opening round at the 2013 Memorial Tournament on Thursday, shooting a 1-under 71 to finish six shots off leader Charl Schwartzel. Woods could not capitalize on what had been a forgiving front nine for Schwartzel and second-place Scott Piercy (6-under) at Muirfield Village Golf Club. Woods shot 1-under on pins 1-9, while Schwartzel and Piercy shot 3-under and 5-under, respectively.

Woods had opportunities to make up ground over the course of the back nine, but each of his three birdies was followed up by a bogey on the next hole. He bogeyed No. 18 to finish in what is currently a pack of 15 golfers tied for 29th place, though he has some esteemed company. Bubba Watson, Kevin Streelman, and Keegan Bradley also join Woods at 1-under heading into Friday.
