Tiger Woods’ practice round rained out at Merion

Tiger Woods was about to tee off when the heavens opened, washing out Monday morning practice sessions at Merion Golf Club.

Tiger Woods generates electricity wherever he goes -- but that’s not always a good thing, as the world No. 1 discovered when lightning interrupted his first U.S. Open-week practice round before it began.

“The crowd was building around the first tee: Tiger Woods was set to tee off for his practice round at 6:45 a.m.,” according to Philly.com’s Aubrey Whelan. “And then...lightning. The flurry of activity that came with the official start of U.S. Open week at Merion Golf Club ground to a halt this morning as a bullhorn sounded seconds after the first lightning strike.”

Woods, of course, was not the only contestant in this week’s major inconvenienced by the soggy weather. Rickie Fowler tweeted that he would take a rain check, while Brandt Snedeker suggested he might require a different form of transportation than a golf cart this week.

The USGA announced the course would open at 11 a.m. ET. -- though weather forecasts called for scattered thunderstorms to hit at about 1 p.m., which should make course workers extremely happy.

The good news for Woods is that he has some experience playing in the murk at Merion, since he got in that round a couple weeks back. Better news is that, after more t-storms on Tuesday, it should be sunny and warm from Wednesday through the end of the tourney.
