U.S. Open leaderboard: Phil Mickelson leads at 3-under

Staying in the red has been a challenge for most of the field, but not Phil Mickelson who leads after a strong first round.

Phil Mickelson is the current leader in the clubhouse after shooting a 67 to open the first round of the 2013 U.S. Open. Mickelson, one of six players currently under par, leads at 3-under.

Mickelson started his round with a bogey at No. 11, but that turned out to be the only shot he dropped on the day. He spent most of the round at even or 1-under, but closed strong with birdies on two of his final four holes to take over the lead. Mickelson’s 67 came just hours after he flew cross-county on a red-eye flight.

Mickelson currently leads by one stroke with Jerry Kelly alone in second place at 2-under. Like Mickelson, Kelly has been able to avoid bogeys, with just one through 17 holes. Putting has been a big part of that, as Kelly made a couple of long par putts. Four players, including Mike Weir, are two strokes off the lead at 1-under.

While many expected ideal scoring conditions, the opposite has been true thus far. Early in the first round, the scoring average was more than four strokes over par, according to Mike O’Malley of Golf Digest. Here is a quick look at how a few notable names have fared with a full leaderboard available at USOpen.com.
